ALBERTO MEDA E PAOLO RIZZATTO

Alberto Meda, born in 1945 in Como, graduated in mechanical engineering at the Politecnico of Milan. Since 1973 he has been the Technical Director of Kartell and since 1979 he is a freelancer who collaborates with other internationally important brands, such as: the Gaggia Brevetti and Alfa Romeo Auto. Today he deals with industrial design, creating projects with various companies, including: Alessi, Mandarina Duck, Ideal Standard, Kartell, Philips and Olivetti. In the '90s he taught Industrial Design at the politecnico of Milan with a design laboratory and in the early 2000s he started to teach at the IUAV of Venice in the course of a Master in Industrial Design. From 2016 he became a member of the Scientific Committee of the Polytechnic Foundation of Milan and participates in numerous conferences and seminars related to industrial design in Europe, Japan and the United States. The Italian designer and architect Paolo Rizzatto was born in Milan in 1941. He graduated in architecture at the Milan Polytechnic in 1965 and he began to work for Arteluce. In 1968 he opened his own practice. At the beginning of his career he mainly in the architectural and design fields. Among his most famous architectural works, we’d like to mention: a day nursery in Segrate (1972), a detached holiday home in Formentera (1972), a residential neighborhood in Feltre (1973), a suburban villa in Bazzano (1976) and a retirement home in Novara (1986). Afterwards Rizzatto decided to experience the lighting design world: 1978 he founded Luceplan with Riccardo Sarfatti. With the “265” lamp collection, for the first time Rizzato’s work was in the limelight. This collection has been followed by “Berenice”, the table lamp made of glass, aluminium and plastic and the “Titania” hanging lamp, which looks like a submarine. But Rizzatto’s creativity didn’t end here: as a matter of fact he became famous also with the creation with the “Dakota” chair and with the “Donald System” bookcase. Among his numerous prizes he had won, we’d like to remember some of them: three “Compasso d’Oro” awards (1981,1989,1994), Design Plus Ambiente in Frankfurt (1992), Product Award Lighting Fair (New York; 1992), Ret Dot Award at Design Innovation in Essen (1994) and the ECDP in Amsterdam (1994). Moreover famous brands such as Luceplan, Arteluce, Alias, Cassina, Joint, Knoll, Nemo and Molteni produces Rizzatto’s works. Meda and Rizzato work together for the famous brand Kartell in order to realize the folding stepladder Upper.
